Over centuries, this small discrepancy accumulated. By the 16th century, the calendar had drifted about 10 days from the actual solar year, causing significant issues for determining the date of Easter and other religious observances that were tied to the spring equinox.
In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII commissioned a calendar reform based on proposals from the Jesuit mathematician and astronomer Christopher Clavius, who built upon the work of the astronomer Aloysius Lilius. The reform had two main components:
- Ten days were skipped in October 1582 to realign the calendar with the solar year. Thursday, October 4, 1582, was followed immediately by Friday, October 15, 1582.
- A new leap year rule was established: century years would only be leap years if they were divisible by 400. This meant that 1700, 1800, and 1900 would not be leap years, but 1600 and 2000 would be.
This adjustment reduced the error from 1 day in 128 years (Julian calendar) to approximately 1 day in 3,030 years with the Gregorian calendar, a remarkable improvement in accuracy.
Structure of the Gregorian Calendar
The Gregorian calendar maintains the basic structure of the Julian calendar:
- A standard year consists of 365 days divided into 12 months.
- The months of April, June, September, and November have 30 days each.
- The months of January, March, May, July, August, October, and December have 31 days each.
- February has 28 days in standard years and 29 days in leap years.
- Leap years occur every 4 years, except for century years not divisible by 400.

Global Adoption
The adoption of the Gregorian calendar was not immediate or universal. Catholic countries such as Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Poland adopted it in 1582, the year of its introduction. However, Protestant and Eastern Orthodox countries were initially resistant to adopting a calendar reform initiated by the Pope.
Great Britain and its colonies (including what would become the United States) did not adopt the Gregorian calendar until 1752, by which time they needed to skip 11 days. Russia continued to use the Julian calendar until after the Russian Revolution, finally adopting the Gregorian calendar in 1918, requiring a skip of 13 days.
